Most of what Ashmere builds is closed or privately developed — it runs specific communities, host sites or infrastructure. Where a project is useful as general-purpose, self-hostable software, we'd rather publish it than keep it to ourselves. That starts with Beacon.

Why we open source anything at all
A lot of Ashmere's work is tied to specific communities or infrastructure and doesn't make sense as a standalone open-source release. But general-purpose tooling — like monitoring a service's uptime — shouldn't require trusting a third party with your infrastructure just to use it. Beacon is built to be self-hosted first.
