How we build, not just what.
These aren't formal certifications or a compliance checklist — they're the judgement calls that consistently show up across Ashmere's projects, from a security platform to a wildlife monitoring network. Some are stricter for one project than another; all of them shape decisions we make day to day.
Security-conscious by default
We design assuming a system will be targeted, not hoping it won't be. That shapes Sentinel and Kestrel CAD most directly, but it applies everywhere we hold data on someone's behalf — including this website.
Honest about limitations
No monitoring platform stops every attack, and no acoustic classifier is always right. Sentinel is built to help detect, monitor and correlate — not to promise prevention. S.W.A.N. treats automated detections as evidence, not certainty, and keeps that visible rather than flattening it into a confident-looking number.
Built to be maintained
We'd sooner run four projects properly than ten badly. Every project we publish is one we intend to keep running — which is also why status and source availability are tracked explicitly for each one, rather than left to guesswork.
Self-hosting where it's realistic
Beacon exists because teams shouldn't have to hand infrastructure telemetry to a third party just to see whether a service is up. Where a project is general-purpose enough to make sense outside Ashmere, self-hosting is the default we design toward.
Privacy as a constraint, not an afterthought
S.W.A.N. is explicit about this: it's wildlife monitoring, not human surveillance, and its audio handling is built to minimise capturing human speech in the first place. We'd rather design a constraint in from the start than bolt on a policy later.
Accessible and fast as a baseline
Keyboard navigation, sensible contrast, and pages that load quickly on a mid-range phone aren't a separate pass at the end — they're part of what it means for something we ship to actually work.
